Water bill high?

What a Running Toilet Is Costing You

Did you know a toilet that runs continuously is the most expensive small fault in the average home. Water passes from the cistern into the bowl and straight down the drain, twenty-four hours a day, and because it makes almost no noise and leaves no mess, it routinely goes unnoticed until a quarterly water bill arrives well above normal.

If you’ve had an unexplained jump in your bill, the toilet is the first thing worth checking. Put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern, leave it half an hour without flushing, and check the bowl. Colour in the bowl means water is passing through a failed seal.

The repair typically costs a fraction of a single inflated bill.

What to look out for

Toilet Replacement and Installation

When a suite is old enough that parts are hard to source, or the pan itself is cracked, replacement is the better value option. Drain Pro supplies and installs new toilet suites, removes and disposes of the old unit, and connects and tests the new one.

Worth knowing before you buy: a new suite has to match the existing set-out, the distance from the wall to the waste outlet, or the installation gets considerably more involved. If you’re buying the toilet yourself, check that measurement first or send us a photo before you order. It’s the single most common reason a straightforward swap turns into a bigger job.

Modern dual-flush suites also use substantially less water per flush than the single-flush units still found in older Penrith homes, which shows up on the bill from the first quarter.

What We Do

Common Toilet Problems We Fix

Dribbling toilet

A Toilet That Won’t Stop Running

Water trickling into the bowl long after the flush has finished almost always means a failed inlet valve or outlet valve seal in the cistern. It’s one of the most common plumbing faults in any home, and one of the cheapest to fix.

Toilet leaking from the base

Leaking at the Base

Water pooling around the bottom of the pan usually points to a failed pan connector or seal where the toilet meets the waste pipe. It’s worth acting on quickly, water working under the floor around a toilet does damage you don’t see until the flooring lifts.

Broken flush button on toilet

Flush Button or Handle Not Working

A button that sticks, does nothing, or needs holding down is generally a worn flush mechanism or a disconnected linkage inside the cistern. On older suites, sourcing the right part matters more than the repair itself, and getting it wrong means doing the job twice.

Toilet with weak flush

Weak or Incomplete Flush

A flush that doesn’t clear the bowl can be a cistern set to fill below its mark, a partially blocked rim, or a failing outlet valve. It can also be the first sign of a blockage further down the line, if more than one fixture is slow, that’s a drain problem rather than a toilet problem, and the blocked drains page covers it.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Most toilet repairs are among the cheaper plumbing jobs, because the common faults are a single worn component in the cistern rather than anything structural. Cost depends on the part and whether it’s a standard fitting or an older suite needing a sourced part. Replacing the whole suite costs more, but is often better value once a toilet is old enough that parts are hard to find.
The three most common are a failed inlet valve, which lets the cistern overfill or refill constantly; a worn outlet valve seal, which lets water pass into the bowl between flushes; and a broken flush mechanism, where the button or linkage no longer operates the valve. All three are repairable without replacing the toilet.
It’s worth attending to promptly. A leak at the base is usually a failed pan seal, and while the leak itself is small, water tracking under the floor causes damage that isn’t visible until it’s advanced, particularly on timber floors and in older homes.
