How it starts

Can You Smell Gas? Do This First

If you can smell gas inside your home, treat it as an emergency.

  • Don’t touch anything electrical. No light switches, no powerpoints, no appliances. Don’t use your phone inside the building, a spark is all it takes.

  • Open doors and windows on your way out to let the gas disperse.
  • Turn the gas off at the meter if you can do it safely on your way past. The valve is at the meter, usually near the front boundary.
  • Get everyone out, then call from outside, the gas distributor’s emergency line first, then us for the repair.

What We Do

Gas Fitting Services

Gas cooktop

Gas Cooktops and Ovens

Connection and testing of gas cooktops and freestanding ovens, including converting an existing outlet or running a new line where the kitchen layout has changed. Every install is pressure tested and certified.

Flued gas heater

Gas Heaters

Flued and unflued gas heater installation, including flue work and ventilation checks. Penrith gets genuinely cold winters compared with coastal Sydney, and gas heating is common through the older housing stock, but an unflued heater in an under-ventilated room is a carbon monoxide risk, and that gets assessed as part of the job rather than assumed.

Gas bayonet installation

Gas Bayonets and Outlets

New bayonet points for portable heaters, outdoor kitchen and barbecue connections, and additional outlets where you’re adding an appliance to an existing supply.

Gas lines

Gas Lines, Meters and Connections

New gas line runs, extensions to existing supply, relocations where you’re renovating, and repairs to damaged or corroded lines. If you’re adding appliances, the existing supply needs checking first, a line sized for a cooktop won’t necessarily carry a cooktop plus a heater plus continuous flow hot water, and undersized supply shows up as appliances that won’t run properly together.

Gas line repair

Gas Leak Detection and Repair

Gas leaks aren’t always something you can smell. A slow leak on a buried line or behind an appliance can show up as a gas bill that’s climbed for no reason, a pilot light that keeps going out, or a faint smell only in one part of the house.

Leaks are located with proper detection equipment and pressure testing rather than guesswork, the faulty section repaired, and the system pressure tested before it’s put back into service.

Certificates of Compliance

Gas fitting work in NSW must be certified. When the job is finished you get the compliance paperwork that shows the work was carried out by a licensed gas fitter and tested properly.

Keep it. You’ll want it when you sell the property, when an insurer asks after an incident, and when the next tradesperson needs to know what’s been done. Work that was never certified is work you can’t prove was done safely and that becomes your problem, not the installer’s.

Drain Pro Plumbing Services holds NSW Licence No. 338366C and carries $20 million in public liability cover. Ask any gas fitter for their licence number before they start. Anyone doing this work properly will give it to you without hesitation.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Not automatically. In NSW, gas fitting requires a specific licence endorsement that sits separately from general plumbing and draining work. A plumber can hold it, but holding a plumbing licence doesn’t by itself authorise gas work. It’s worth asking any tradesperson directly whether their licence covers gas fitting before they touch a gas appliance or line and asking for the number.
Connecting a property that has never had mains gas involves the gas distributor as well as a licensed gas fitter, and the two are billed separately. The distributor handles bringing the supply to the meter, the gas fitter handles everything from the meter into the property. Costs vary with distance to the existing main and what’s needed on the property side, so it needs quoting individually.
No. Connecting any gas appliance in NSW must be done by a licensed gas fitter, and the work has to be certified. Beyond the legal position, an incorrectly connected appliance is a fire and carbon monoxide risk, and uncertified gas work can affect an insurance claim.
Yes. Gas fitting work in NSW must be certified, and you should receive that documentation on completion. Keep it, it matters at sale, at insurance claim time, and for any tradesperson working on the system later.
