Do This First

In a Plumbing Emergency, Do These Three Things First

Before we arrive, these three things limit the damage.

  • Turn the water off at the meter. The mains tap is at the water meter, usually near the front boundary. Turn it clockwise until it stops. This kills the supply to the whole property.
  • Turn the power off if water is near anything electrical. Switch off at the switchboard, and don’t touch powerpoints, light fittings or wet appliances.
  • If you can smell gas, don’t touch anything electrical at all — no switches, no phone inside the building. Open doors and windows, get everyone out, and call the gas distributor’s emergency line from outside before you call us.

Then call. The sooner we are on the way, the less there is to dry out afterwards.

Does it need a plumber right now?

What We Treat as an Emergency

Not everything needs a plumber tonight. These do:

01

A burst pipe or water you can’t stop, see burst and leaking pipes

02

Sewage backing up into the house, the yard or a shower base

03

Multiple fixtures backing up at once, that’s a main line blockage, not a fixture problem. See blocked drains

04

A gas leak or the smell of gas, see gas fitting

05

No hot water in a household that can’t go without, see hot water systems

06

A hot water unit leaking from the base, which can release its full tank

07

Water near electrical fittings, in a ceiling or through a light fitting

08

A blocked toilet in a single-bathroom home

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Turn the water off at the meter, and turn the power off at the switchboard if water is anywhere near electrical fittings. Move furniture and valuables clear. If you can smell gas, don’t touch anything electrical, get out and call the gas distributor’s emergency line from outside.
Yes. Drain Pro operates seven days a week.
It depends. A single slow sink can wait. Multiple fixtures backing up at once means the main line is blocked and everything you put down the drain is going somewhere it shouldn’t, that needs attention the same day. Sewage backing up into the house always does.
Drain Pro is based in Werrington Downs, so most of the Penrith area is a short run. Call and you’ll get a realistic time rather than an optimistic one.
An accessible burst section is typically repaired in a single visit of one to two hours. Concealed leaks under slabs or inside walls take longer, because locating the leak precisely comes before the repair. Full pipe replacement across a house is a multi-day job and is quoted separately.
